When looking back and thinking about how Newcastle Alumni have contributed to Architecture, chances are you would initially think of Alumni such as Terry Farrell or the Smithsons. However, the Alumni I shall be looking back at is someone who has had more of a personal impact, this person being George Clarke.
Channel 4: George clarke’s amazing spaces
His academic career led him here to Newcastle University’s School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape. Where he achieved a First Class BA Honours in Architectural studies and a certificate in Architectural Practice.
While Clarke’s academic career is certainly impressive, it is his professional career in television that his impact on me and so many others can most strongly be felt. With his show titled “George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces” first airing in 2012, I fondly remember my parents recommending and wanting to watch the show with me when I started showing an interest in architecture in my design and technology class at school. Clarke’s bespoke and intimate approach to architectural design in the show is what really spoke to me. His combination of warm personality and humble demeanour was inviting to both hosts and viewers alike. His show was without a doubt one of the reasons why I saw architectural design as accessible to me.
So, while it is important to recognise the achievements of Alumni through their work. Let us not underestimate the inspiration that Clarke has given to thousands of people across the country.
